The object

M81 and M82 form a well-known pair of galaxies in Ursa Major, offering a contrast between a relatively calm spiral structure and a more active, disturbed starburst galaxy.

Across the field lies the Integrated Flux Nebula, a faint layer of galactic cirrus within the Milky Way. Although often mistaken for background noise, it is in fact much closer, adding subtle structure between the observer and the galaxies.

Capture notes

The dataset was captured remotely from Trevinca. A significant portion of the broadband and Hα frames had to be discarded due to tracking issues, leaving a more limited set of usable data than intended.

Processing

Processing required additional care due to eccentricity issues in the remaining frames. Correction tools were used where necessary, while trying to avoid introducing artificial sharpness.

The aim was to retain the faint IFN without overemphasising it, allowing it to remain present but subtle, rather than competing with the galaxies themselves.
