Cygnus Shell - W63 (SNR G082.2+05.3)

A narrowband capture of W63 (SNR G082.2+05.3), a faint supernova remnant whose looping shell only really shows up in the OIII channel, set against unrelated foreground nebulosity.

The object

W63 (SNR G082.2+05.3) is a supernova remnant in Cygnus, and a genuinely faint one - its visible structure is almost entirely confined to the OIII emission line, with barely a trace showing up anywhere else.

The red nebulosity surrounding it in the frame isn't actually part of the remnant - it sits at a different distance entirely, which is what gives the image its slightly three-dimensional feel.

Capture notes

Getting the shell to show up at all took a heavy tilt toward OIII - roughly twice the integration of the hydrogen data - and even then, the remnant only just clears the noise.

Processing

Processing leaned on isolating the OIII signal without dragging noise along with it, since there was so little margin between the remnant and the background.

Keeping the unrelated red nebulosity distinct from the shell mattered more than usual here - conflating the two would have erased the one thing that makes this object interesting.
